mass wasting risks in Ecuador

In this week's blog, we will be talking about mass waste in Ecuador known as mudslides, landslides, and rockslides.

What are landslides?

landslides are the "movement of a mass of rock, debris, or earth down a slope" ( USGS). the thing that causes the landslides are forces acting down a slope. Things such as rainfall, snow, and earthquakes quickly result in mudslides.

In Ecuador, Landslides are a common natural hazard that kills dozens of people every year. A crucial landslide occurred in February 2022 in the Capitol of Ecuador Quito killing 24 people and injuring many more after rainfall. A hillside collapsed in a neighborhood causing mud to fill on top of houses and streets. Crushing civilians and cars through the neighborhood many were not found.

Ecuador has a high natural hazard level that can destroy apart cities and families in minutes. This works as a domino effect. For example, the earth's quick and powerful enough to cause a tsunami can also result in mudslides. Ecuador does not have good infrastructure to maintain homes to have shelter meaning it is not even said to shelter at home.
