Week 10 Extreme weather

For this week's blog, we will be talking about India's Heatwave

India tends to be a hot country that tends to have heat waves that are unbearable for Labor. "Exposure to heat also caused a loss of 167.2 billion potential labor hours among Indians in 2021, the study noted." (India heatwave: High temperatures killing more Indians now, Lancet study finds). Therefore without labor, there is no money to support families or even to feed themselves.

Indias Heat waves have become more frequent and longer lasting since the years 2000-2004 and 2017-2021 resulting in 55% more deaths.

This heat wave not only affects the civilians living in India but also damages the natural resources of the country. For example, heat waves have triggered forest fires, and reduced India’s wheat crop yields.

What to do in Heat Waves

  • Avoid going out in the sun, especially between 12.00 noon and 3.00 p.m

  • Drink sufficient water and as often as possible, even if not thirsty
    • Wear lightweight, light-coloured, loose, and porous cotton clothes. Use protective goggles, an umbrella/hat, shoes or chappals while going out in sun.

    1. Hello Omar!
Thank you for posting such a great post! Indea indeed has an extreme weather, along with massive population which can result in disastrous consequences and loses. I read an article few days ago about egypt, where it states that this year India has recorded extreme weather events on 242 of the 273 days between January 1 and September 30 which mean that more than 88% of the days in nine months!
I loved how you mentioned ideas to avoid excessive heat waves, as drinking sufficient amounts water and staying hydrated is a key component in surviving a heat wave along with wearing appropriate clothes , and avoiding sun during the peak hours is essential to avoid sun strokes!

Thank you for posting Omar! I really enjoyed interacting with you post!
